FIRST SOLAR TO BUILD BIGGEST SOLAR PLANT IN CHINA

A memorandum of understanding has been made with the Chinese government for First Solar Inc., a U.S. company, to build the world’s biggest solar plant in China.

This is an important venture by First Solar as it tries to revitalize its solar industry, after new projects have been halted due to the economic crisis, and there could not be a better place to start and introduce the alternative energy among the Asian nations than in China.

China, which is known to be the world’s top producer of carbon dioxide, wants to see the nation by 2010 generating 10 percent of its energy from renewable sources and escalating it to 15 percent by 2020.

First Solar’s timetable will start in 2010 with the construction of a 30 megawatt demonstration project in Ordos. It will be followed by a 100 megawatt and 870 megawatt projects that are estimated to be completed in 2014. The final phase will be a 1,000 megawatt installation expected to be finished in 2019.
